The shadows she observed in the grass inspired her to work for months on an approach that however, did not paint the chosen object on canvas. Instead, the object is transformed into a representation of the subject in which the painting is the vehicle for its own painterly interpretation, especially when the subjects are alive or perishable like people or fruits. Alexa Meade's works are fleeting however the photograph is what remains. Trompe l'oeil is achieved through the combination of two methods of painting and photographing. The result is an unflattened and two-dimensional image. At times, Meade integrates her painted models with the 3-dimensional space around them, allowing them to engage with this self-created world. In this way, she blurs the lines between photography, painting performance and installation.
